Luxury Backyard Transformation

This recent project in Encinitas, CA, was a dramatic modern backyard renovation that revitalized an outdated and cluttered space into a sophisticated outdoor retreat. The couple’s backyard had become overwhelmed with different levels, overgrown greenery, and an out-of-place studio. Our design strategy began with a complete demolition, giving us a fresh canvas to bring their vision of an elegant, multi-functional outdoor living space to life.

To maximize the uneven terrain, we created terraced retaining walls, transforming a challenging slope into a series of distinct, usable areas. This allowed us to integrate a custom outdoor kitchen and a cozy fireplace area beneath a fully enclosed patio cover—perfect for San Diego’s diverse weather. The design balances privacy with openness, inviting guests to enjoy outdoor dining and social gatherings.

For relaxation, we installed a modern deck with a drop-in jacuzzi, offering ample space for lounging and sunbathing. Recognizing the husband’s recent retirement and creative pursuits, we added a stunning art studio featuring a full bathroom, where he can paint, read, and unwind. To further personalize the space, we sourced a beautiful water fountain in the wife’s favorite color, creating a charming and tranquil area along the side of the house. This corner, enhanced with turf and decorative concrete pads, provides a cozy spot for morning coffee or evening relaxation.
